Legislature has failed to fully fund education

Jul 12 2010

During the 2010 legislative session, Washington State Legislature passed into law SHB 2893, increasing the levy lid by 4 percent. The Northshore Council PTSA Board of Directors finds that by raising the levy lid, the State Legislature has failed to live up to its responsibility to fully fund education, forcing local education agencies to seek additional financial support through supplemental levies to make up for the inadequacies of the state’s education funding structure.

While the Northshore Council PTSA Board of Directors does not agree with the State Legislature’s decision, we do appreciate the difficult situation in which local education agencies, including the Northshore School District, have found themselves. In August, the Northshore School District will run a supplemental levy to sustain — not enhance — the district’s educational program.

Whereas sustaining educational programs is in the best interest of all students, therefore we, the Northshore Council PTSA Board of Directors, hereby support the Northshore School District’s decision to run the Supplemental Education Maintenance and Operations Levy in August 2010.

Sue Freeman

Northshore Council PTSA president 2010/2011 on behalf of the Northshore Council PTSA Board of Directors
