Mother, daughter honored in rescue of senior citizen

On Oct. 10, Kenmore residents Kira Martin and daughter Katie were enjoying a bike ride when they heard a call for help.

The pair investigated that call and found senior citizen Louise Ford on the ground in her front yard.

According to Terri Jones, public information officer for the Northshore Fire Department, Ford had fallen while trying to unravel a garden hose.

During that fall, she sustained a serious cut from a border rock in her garden. She also broke her wrist. 

Jones added that Martin and Katie called 911 and stayed with Ford until the emergency responders arrived.

According to Jones, Ford’s yard is hidden by trees and shrubs, so she is fortunate that her cry for help was heard since she couldn’t be seen from the street.

Ford said, “I usually carry my phone with me in case something like this happens, but this time I thought it would be OK. I was just going outside for a minute.”

The Northshore Fire Department Board of Commissioners recognized Martin and her daughter at the board’s Nov. 3 meeting for acting quickly and getting Ford the help she needed.

“Katie has written Louise many letters and drawn her lots of get-well pictures” Martin said. “Louise lives alone, and now has the Martin family as friends.”
