Bothell lowers flags to honor fallen Marine

The city of Bothell lowered its flags Sept. 20 in remembrance of 1st Lt. Nicholas Madrazo, a U.S. Marine from Bothell killed in action while serving in Afghanistan.

“On behalf of the city of Bothell, I express our sympathies on the loss of 1st Lt. Madrazo,” said Bothell City Manager Bob Stowe. “Many in Bothell are deeply saddened by the tragic death of this young soldier, and the pain his family and friends are experiencing is unimaginable. There are no words to express our gratitude to 1st Lt. Madrazo and all military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice by serving our country and to those troops that continue to fight for our daily freedom.”

Bothell Mayor Mark Lamb also issued a proclamation at the Sept. 16 City Council meeting that Sept. 20, 2008 was a “Day of Celebrating the Life of 1st Lt. Nicholas Madrazo” and his service to the community. To review the proclamation, visit www.ci.bothell.wa.us.

The “Nicholas Madrazo Memorial Fund” has been created at U.S. Bank. People can go to any branch and donate under that fund, which will go to the family and building of a flag pole in memory of Madrazo.

Kenmore to celebrate new History Path

The Kenmore Heritage Society and city of Kenmore will host a History Walk dedication ceremony to celebrate the new Kenmore History Path at Log Boom Park, which includes a series of 10 panels telling the story of Kenmore from Ice Age to incorporation. The event will take place at 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at Log Boom Park.

WSDOT to close

part of SR 522

Crews working for Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in Bothell will close eastbound State Route 522 between State Route 527 and Interstate 405 from 11:30 p.m. Sept. 26 through 5 a.m. Sept. 29.

During the closure, crews will connect the eastbound lanes to a newly-built roadway. When the highway opens, traffic will travel on the new eastbound lanes. The work is weather-dependent, which means crews may have to reschedule the closure. Detour signs will direct drivers to northbound SR 527 and southbound I-405 to reach eastbound SR 522. The project is part of a plan to build a new entrance to the south side of the University of Washington, Bothell/Cascadia Community College campus, which also includes improvements to SR 522 from the I-405 interchange to Kaysner Way in Bothell.
