Gap in Island County commissioner race down to 25 votes

Aug 21 2008

Curt Gordon has pulled even closer in the race for the District 1 seat on the Island County board of commissioners.

Democrat Helen Price Johnson is still in front, with 4,760 votes, Island County election workers reported late Thursday afternoon.

Incumbent Republican Phil Bakke is still second with 2,058 votes.

But Gordon, a no-party candidate in the four-way race, is now just 25 votes behind Bakke. Late Wednesday, Gordon trailed Bakke by 31 votes, and the gap between the two was 80 votes after the first tally was announced on Election Day.

Republican Reece Rose remained in fourth place on Thursday, with 1,451 votes.

Island County officials said roughly 2,200 ballots countywide remain to be counted.

The top two candidates in the race will advance to the November election.
