Highway 20 wreck injures two, snarls traffic

Aug 15 2008

Both drivers were taken away in an ambulance following at two-car accident Friday afternoon at the busy intersection of Highway 20 and Ault Field Road north of Oak Harbor.

The two men were alive and talking as emergency crews carried them on stretchers to the ambulance. Airbags deployed on both of the vehicles involved, a black Mazda sedan and a turquoise Honda Ridgeline SUV.

It appeared that the Mazda was either northbound or trying to take a left at the intersection. The Honda was coming through the intersection from the west, toward Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. The Honda driver was dressed in a white Navy uniform.

Neither Fire District 2 Chief Marv Koorn or Island County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Hawley could give immediate details of what had occurred. They were waiting for the State Patrol to arrive for the investigation.

The wreck closed the northbound lane and left turn lane, forcing flaggers to detour traffic around the accident scene. Cars were back up for a long distance as a result. At 2:35 p.m. they State Patrol had not yet arrived.
