Proposed Belfair espresso stand comes under fire for provocative dress theme

Aug 05 2008

A proposed espresso stand in Mason County has drawn the ire of locals and at least one county commissioner.

Belfair's proposed Espresso Gone Wild was the topic of eight complaints by citizens attending the July 29 Mason County Commissioners meeting.

"[Belfair is] the gateway to Hood Canal and we don’t want that kind of business in our town," said local resident John Campbell, according to meeting minutes obtained from the commissioners office.

Others complained that their children might be exposed to scantily dressed baristas at the establishment and be offended.

Commissioner and chair Tim Sheldon "assured the audience that he was also very concerned about this and that the County would be doing everything they could to prevent this kind of establishment from opening after talking to the County Prosecutor," according to the minutes.

A job description for Espresso Gone Wild listed on Craigslist.com (see here) advertised the business as having a "catchy" theme, like that of the Seattle-area Cowgirls Espresso and provided a link to the latter's Web site.
