Kangs fastpitch softball wins state title behind Bivens' gem
Freshman Tori Bivens entered the state high school fastpitch softball tournament with a lot on her shoulders. She had taken over for Lake Washington High School's No. 1 starting pitcher, who was injured earlier this season, and was asked to take on the most important defensive position on the field in the most important tournament of the year in Selah, Wash.
But the freshman did what she done all season, she rose to the challenge, pitching the Kangs to the 2014 2A State Title with a 4-0 victory against Othello on Saturday. The Kangs baseball team also placed second at state.
Bivens was so good that she struck out 12 Husky players and held the second-best team in the state to just one hit, which came with two outs during the seventh and final inning. Bivens also had the first RBI of the game for the Kangs, while Kim Velde also knocked in a run. Hannah Walker came up big for Lake Washington with a home run.
The Kangs showed off their bats against Lynden with a 10-0 victory during the semifinals of state on Saturday. Julia Turner had the biggest hit for Lake Washington, a two-run home run. Velde was able to take to the pitching circle and give the team some innings during the game.
It also gave Bivens some much needed rest before the title game. The Kangs began the tournament with a comeback beating Port Angeles, 6-2, after giving up two runs during the first inning.
Lone Kangs senior Cori Meyers, Dakota Pettit-Garl and Walker collected two hits each. Lake Washington earned a shutout during the second round with a 3-0 victory against Deer Park. Walker gave the Kangs all the offense they would need with two RBI.
Pettit-Garl caught all four games for the Kangs during the two-day tournament.
The Kangs finish 22-2 overall this season with their only losses coming against 3A and 4A teams.
