UPDATE: Man found dead in pickup off Cedar Grove Road is identified
UPDATE: The King County Medical Examiner's Office on Friday identified the man found dead in a pickup truck as Valiant Carlton, 54, who lives in the Renton area. He suffered multiple injuries when the truck crashed down a ravine near Maple Valley. He worked nearby. The investigation is continuing, but King County Sheriff's Detective Jason Stanley said there was no evidence of foul play.
THE ORIGINAL STORY:
A man was found dead Thursday off Cedar Grove Road in a missing person’s pickup, possibly a 54-year-old Renton man reported missing that day, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The man’s girlfriend reported him missing on after he did not return from work on Wednesday. Family members used the missing man’s cell phone GPS to locate his pickup down a steep, heavily wooded ravine, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Within hours of reporting the man missing, family members were able to locate the man’s pickup about 200 feet off of the Cedar Grove Road. The missing man’s family called. Firefighters found a man, who had died, partially inside the truck.
Major accident reconstruction detectives spent about seven hours investigating the circumstances surrounding the truck leaving the roadway. It took two large tow trucks several hours to extract the pickup from the ravine.
Due to privacy concerns, police generally cannot use cell phone information to locate missing persons unless they suspect an imminent danger to the person or suspect foul play, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Family and friends of missing persons have the ability to access missing people’s cell phone GPS without the same protections that people have from privacy intrusions from law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Office indicated it is not saying that the man found in the truck is the missing Renton man; however, the King County medical examiner will identify the man in the truck and determine his cause of death.
