Suspected explosive device found outside Sumner warehouse
June 4, 2008 · 6:45 PM
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department Bomb Disposal Unit detonated a suspected explosive device Wednesday evening in Sumner's warehouse district.
The device, which appeared to be a small pipe bomb, was discovered by an employee of the Simmons company in the 13600 block of 52nd Street East and brought inside the building. Employees called the police who evacuated the building and secured the area until the bomb squad could arrive.
Members of the bomb disposal unit set up outside the office and used a robot to retrieve the bomb from the building. The device was placed among two stacks of sandbags and "rendered safe" by venting the closed container with a small round fired from the robot.
Sumner police are investigating the incident. For a full report, please check the June 11 issue of the Sumner Reporter.
