Snow wreaking havoc with South Kitsap sports schedule

Inclement weather continues to present challenges for South Kitsap’s athletic programs.

When the girls basketball team faces off against Skyline in Tuesday’s Riverside Invitational in Auburn, it will be two weeks since the Wolves last played.

Coach Mark Lutzenhiser was just hoping to get back into the gym. South (5-1) last played Dec. 16 in a 42-35 loss against Gig Harbor. Its game last Thursday at Lincoln, in addition to Tuesday’s contest against Wilson, were postponed.

Lutzenhiser said he wasn’t as concerned about the missed games as the practices.

He was informed by South athletic director Ed Santos on Sunday that the school didn’t even have power. Couple that with the desire to keep students off icy roads and Lutzenhiser said his team wouldn’t be able to practice before Tuesday.

“Most school districts don’t want you practicing if the roads aren’t good,” he said. “Everybody is in the same boat unless you went to California and got out on some early flights.”

Lutzenhiser, who was a graduate assistant for the Chico State men’s basketball program during the 1989-90 season and still has some ties within the California coaching community, said playing in a tournament down there might be an option in the future.

For now, he’s just waiting for the weather to clear up. Lutzenhiser said the postponement of the Wilson game “isn’t a big deal” because it initially was scheduled for January until a scheduling conflict arose that moved it up to Tuesday. He said the game at Lincoln has been rescheduled for Jan. 12.

Monday’s game will create a busy week for the Wolves as they follow with a home game Wednesday against Central Kitsap and then play again two days later at Olympia.

The schedule is the same that week for the Wolves’ boys basketball team, but they play at opposite venues than the girls program.
