First city council candidate declares

Port Orchard restaurateur Amy Igloi Matsuno on Thursday became the first to declare herself a candidate for this year’s Port Orchard City Council race, when she addressed the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce.
“I have watched our city take an exciting new direction and position itself for a very positive future,” she said. “I believe that as a successful businessperson under 30 years of age with an education in finance and in business, I have a lot to offer the city.”
Four city council positions are open this year, with all incumbents signaling their intention to seek another term.
Matsuno will announce whom she plans to challenge when she files candidacy papers during the week of June 1, but it is likely she will oppose Fred Chang.
Matusuno, 28, opened Amy’s on the Bay with her husband as chef in 2006. If elected, she would be the youngest member of the council by more than a decade.
Matsuno is finishing up her business degree at the University of Washington Tacoma this spring.
