Tall ships arrive in Port Orchard

Jul 01 2008

The HMS Bounty pulled into the Port Orchard Marina Tuesday afternoon, one of the first of more than a dozen Tall Ships scheduled to rest the night here before spending the weekend in Tacoma.

According to the Tall Ships website, the Bounty was built as an ocean-faring vessel in 1960 for the movie “Mutiny on the Bounty," but it has also starred in “Sponge Bob Square Pants” and “Pirates of the Caribbean II.”

Steve Slaton, director of the marina for the Port of Bremerton, said 17 ships in all were expected to stay Tuesday night, and this is the group's first visit to the marina.

Visitors to the marina will not be able to tour the ships, however.

“The crews need to rest, so they need to tie up, eat, and get plenty of rest before they go to work in Tacoma,” Slaton said, explaining that his marina’s goal is to be good hosts to the crews.

The ships were scheduled head out some time Wednesday.
