What’s Up for First Friday | Art Walks in Bremerton and Bainbridge

Art all in the family on Bainbridge and a community canvas in Bremerton.

Two quarters of Bainbridge Island's first family of metal sculpture are featured at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts this month in a show called "Kinship." The Matriarch, Michele Van Slyke — whose sculpture is found in public venues around the sound — and her daughter Solia Hermes — creator of childrens' chairs at the Poulsbo and Bainbridge branches of the Kitsap Regional Library — share the back gallery in an exhibit examining their connections to the island and to one another.

The duo will be at the gallery from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 6 for First Friday, 151 Winslow Way.

BREMERTON

A 'Community Canvas' at the Amy Burnett

Celebrating the electoral time of year, Amy Burnett and friends will be mingling with winners from Bremerton's general elections for First Friday — from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 6 at 296 Fourth St. in Bremerton.

While welcoming winning politicos, the gallery also will showcase a wealth of new work from the diversity of residents — including paper sculptor Juan Rodriguez, abstractionist Mary Doyle and the building's newest tenant, a group that designs and creates costumes for the Kitsap Opera.

Meanwhile, Doyle will be calling on First Friday patrons to try their own hand in the artists' world, with what she calls the "community canvas." It's an idea she launched last month.

"I just put out a bunch of paint and say, 'There are no rules,' which is hard for some people ... but it's like a community project," Doyles said.

Following First Friday, the artist will then incorporate the community canvas into one of her upcoming works.
