North Kitsap trails nab National Parks grant

The recently formed North Kitsap Trails Association (NKTA) was awarded a grant from the National Park Service under its Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program.
The National Parks Service will become a working partner with the NKTA, providing technical assistance and an experienced community planner, Sue Abbot, who will partner with the NKTA and volunteers in creating the plan for a regional water and land trail system.
The concept, known as the “String of Pearls” calls for the eventual linking of North Kitsap waterfront communities in a series of on- and offroad trails. A comprehensive water trail encompassing the entire area is being planned as well.
“This is a wonderful award for the association” said NKTA Vice President John Willet. “In the past year, businesses, agencies, and volunteers from all our North Kitsap communities have expended an enormous effort getting the String of Pearls launched. To date volunteers have registered over 2,500 volunteer hours. To see that effort recognized and supported by our federal government is a real boost and affirmation that we are on the right track.”
The concept for the trail system originated as Olympic Property Group began work to create a vision for its 8,000 acre land holding in the area.
The North Kitsap Trails Association is currently applying to become a 501(c)(3) and is made up of volunteers from local communities and hiking, biking, equestrian, and kayaking enthusiasts.
