S’Klallam Tribe donates $5K to North Kitsap Save Our Pool drive

The Save Our Pool association of citizens and business people working to keep the North Kitsap Community Pool open after Aug. 31 announced that the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe donated $5,000 to efforts to raise funds to keep the pool open.

Save Our Pool is raising community awareness regarding pool operations while establishing community-based financial support for the pool. A 5K Fun Run held July 20 raised $4,656 and the group has held demonstrations and marched in the Poulsbo Third of July and Kingston Fourth of July parades to gain support.

So far, donations have reached over $30,000.

The North Kitsap School District had proposed closing the pool Aug. 31 in an effort to balance its budget for the 2008-2009 school year. The district has estimated it will cost $350,000 annually to keep the pool open. But largely through the efforts of Save Our Pool protesting the closure, the district is looking at what it will take it keep the pool open and funded through the end of the year before it finalizes the district budget. The Save Our Pool group is also working with the City of Poulsbo and Kitsap County to brainstorm other ways to fund it.
