The Westside Classic is today at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood where 2A Klahowya, 3A Olympic and 4A Central Kitsap each will compete for berths to the Washington State Championships, to be held Nov. 8 in Pasco.

For Klahowya, Will Rosen and Steven Hays, who at leagues finished 24th and 25th, respectively, are the top boys’ runners. Derris Davis placed 27th (16:56.62) at leagues and also has ran well for the Eagles.

On the girls side, junior Angela Hanners posted the best KSS time at leagues with a 20:45.36, her personal best.

The top three teams and 15 individuals advance to state for boys and girls 2A classifications.

John Wojtech, who finished third in the boys three mile race at the Oct. 23 Olympic League Championships with a time of 15 minutes, 21.62 seconds, holds Oly’s best state hopes. Trojan senior Brenden Schruhl, who finished 12th overall at the league championships (15.58:83), also figures to contend for berth to state. In boys 3A competition, the top seven teams and 35 individuals advance to state.

Melissa Shafer, a junior, was Olympic’s top girls finisher at leagues, placing 22nd (20:46.12). On the girls side, the top eight teams and 40 individuals advance to the 3A state championships.

In Shane Moskowitz, the Cougars have the frontrunner to win on the boys side. Moskowitz won the Narrows League Championships 5K race with a time of 15:25.54, edging runner-up Conner Peloquin (15:36.36), of Gig Harbor.

Zackery Weber finished seventh at the league race (16:46.97) and also is in the mix for a state bid.

Shane’s twin sister, Shannon, finished second place for the girls at the league championships with a time of (18:47.13), behind Olympia’s Clare Kane (18:32.95). Shannon figures to be near the top today.

The top six teams and 40 individuals move on to state in both 4A boys and 4A girls competition.

The course opens from 8 to 10:30 a.m. for walk through.
