Central Kitsap edges South Kitsap in 14-13 thriller

Sep 12 2008

Central Kitsap survived a last-second scare to emerge with a 14-13 win over South Kitsap on Friday night at Silverdale Stadium.

South recovered a muffed Central Kitsap punt on the Cougars' 15-line with three minutes remaining in the game and drove inside the 5 with 10 seconds remaining on second down. But with the clock running, the Wolves eschewed a field goal attempt in favor of an incomplete pass in the end zone as time expired.

An illegal man downfield penalty on SK was declined on the play and the game ended.

South Kitsap had atoned for a miscue of its own earlier in the half with a sustained touchdown drive on its final possession of the third quarter, capped by a one-yard plunge by Gordy Anderson to bring SK to within a point of the Cougars, at 14-13.

A mishandled snap on the extra point kept the Wolves from tying the score.

A turnover on the second-half kickoff broke a 7-7 tie, as Central Kitsap recovered a bounding ball deep in the Wolves' territory and capitalized immediately.

Starting from the SK 26, Jason Simonis connected with Christian Wesley for a 26-yard play-action touchdown pass on just the second play of the half. The 6-5 Cougar receiver won a jump ball in the end zone to put CK up 14-7 with 11:11 remaining in the third quarter.
