It’s hard to keep up on a soccer field when there’s only a couple subs available.

The King’s West girls soccer team learned that lesson Tuesday at Silverdale Stadium losing 4-0 against the Klahowya Eagles (1-2-1).

With just 13 players available at the game, time took its toll on the Warriors (0-2), as the squad eventually just got worn down.

Sophomore goalie Lakiesha Niles stopped more than 10 shots in the first half alone, helping to preserve a 0-0 tie.

The Warriors did a good job of containing the Eagles, but weren’t able to get many shot opportunities of their own in the first half. Perhaps the squad’s best scoring chance came just after the game started as a header in front of the net was stopped by Klahowya goalie Karina Ellis.

In the second half, the Eagles continued to come out firing, eventually breaking through for 4 second-half goals, led by senior Jessica Squires, who put two in the net. The game’s first goal didn’t happen until the 56th minute.

Eagles coach Troy Oelschlager said King’s West was able to do some good things defensively to keep Klahowya off rhythm in the first half.

“I would have liked to see us finish better in the first half,” Oelschlager said. “In the second half, we were able to create more opportunities.”

Oelschlager said his team is ready to jump back into Nisqually League play.

“We know what the pace of the game is going to be like going into league,” he said.

He said one key for the Eagles as they move toward league play will be the continued strong play of the defense.

“I’m really confident with our defense,” Oelschlager said. “For the most part, we’ve done a really good job.”

The Eagles earned a 0-0 tie against Port Townsend, a perennial power atop the Nisqually League, on Wednesday.

Next up, the Eagles head to Foster on Tuesday.

OLYMPIC

The week also was kind to the Olympic Trojans (2-2-0) despite going 1-1 overall.

Olympic had one of its toughest matches this season Tuesday, sizing up against powerhouse Gig Harbor on the road.

But the Trojans, hoping to vie for a Narrows League playoff spot this season, played a tight game, falling to the Tides 1-0.

Gig Harbor’s Ashley Flateland scored the game’s only goal in the 58th minute.

Despite the loss, Olympic rebounded with a 2-1 win over Bremerton Thursday.

Liz Curry scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Trojans. Shannon White also scored and Kelsey Anchors had an assist as the Trojans didn’t allow a score until the 79th minute, thanks to tough defense and a strong effort by goalie Pepper Fanua.

Olympic plays CK at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20.
