Rangers now 0-5 against Edmonds

Apr 02 2002

Perennial NWAACC baseball power Edmonds swept three Northern Division games from Olympic College over the weekend.

The pitching-rich Tritons beat Olympic 4-0 and 5-0 in Edmonds on Saturday, March 30 in Edmonds and held off the Rangers 8-7 on Sunday, March 31 at Bremerton’s Legion Field.

That leaves the Rangers (5-8 overall) 0-5 this season against the Tritons, who visit Legion Field for another doubleheadser on April 27.

Edmonds’ Clary Carlsen, a sophomore from North Kitsap, pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in the first game of the series. Carlsen, a hard-throwing right-hander, struck out five. Edmonds lefty Kent Bergsagel allowed just one hit — an infield single by Mike Dressler — in the nightcap.

Olympic pitchers Jeff Berend and Derek Winderl kept the Rangers in both games. They kept the power-hitting Tritons off-balance with an assortment of off-speed pitches. Berend, sophomore from Klahowya, scattered 10 hits while Winderl, a freshman from Bremerton, allowed just four and only two earned runs in seven innings.

Olympic out-hit the Tritons on Sunday (10-8) and led 4-0 after the first inning, but Edmonds took advantage of a misplayed ball in the sun to score two runs in the second and got to starter Austin Hendershot for six runs in the third, four with two outs. OC relievers Jon Clapper and Scott Stockman combined to pitch five scoreless innings.

The Rangers were unable to come up with enough key hits after getting runners in scoring position in nearly every inning.

Olympic (0-3 North) plays at Green River today, April 3.
