The fourth annual Brownsville Appreciation Day (BAD) saw an increased turnout, and now four elementary schools are reaping the benefits.

Port of Brownsville Commissioner Bob Kalmbach and Port Manager Jerry Rowland were at the Central Kitsap School District board meeting Wednesday night to make a presentation to the principals of four different elementary schools.

“We decided about five years ago that we wanted to give back to the community,” Kalmbach said. “Something for the tax dollars that they’re putting into it.”

So BAD was created to give the 10,000 homes in the port’s taxing district a family friendly event to attend and have a good time.

The port decided to donate the funds to the four schools that are located in the district: Brownsville, Cottonwood, Esquire Hills and Woodlands Elementaries.

With this year being the biggest yet thanks to the event’s classic car show, the Port of Brownsville was able to give $1,125 to each school, a huge increase from the $300 that was donated to each of the schools last year.
