Silverdale DUI wreck results in 20-year-old airlifted to Harborview

Jul 21 2008

A 20-year-old Silverdale man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle early Saturday morning with serious injuries following a motor vehicle collision in the area of Ridgetop Boulevard NW in Silverdale.

The collision occurred at about 3:20 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Ridgetop Blvd. NW and Plateau Circle NW in the Ridgetop area of Silverdale. The crash involved a 1992 Geo Storm and a 1999 Ford F-150 truck, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office (KCSO). It was reported that the 16-year-old female driver of the truck left the scene of the crash, driving the truck southbound on Ridgetop Boulevard.

Sheriff's deputies were able to follow debris from the collision, along with marks in the roadway caused by the damaged truck, to the intersection of Ridgetop Boulevard and Ridge Point Circle. Deputies found evidence that the truck struck a curb and then continued on Ridge Point Circle to Mount Baldy Lane, where the truck was found stopped against a parked truck, according to KCSO. The driver was detained for investigation.

A preliminary analysis by traffic investigators indicates that the Geo Storm, driven by a 17-year-old Silverdale boy, was traveling northbound on Ridgetop Boulevard with a 20-year-old male passenger.

At the Plateau Circle intersection, the driver of the Ford truck failed to stop at the intersection stop sign and entered Ridgetop Boulevard. The Geo Storm struck the truck causing extensive damage to both vehicles, reports stated. The driver of the Geo Storm was not seriously injured and declined transport to the hospital. His 20-year-old passenger struck the front windshield and sustained serious head and body injuries. He was transported to the landing pad at Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

There were two passengers in the Ford truck: a 16-year-old female and a 17-year-old female, both from East Bremerton. The 17-year-old was not wearing a seat belt and the force of the collision threw her up against the top of the cab, striking her head.

A passing motorist stopped at the crash and called 911. He then helped the injured passenger climb out of the truck before the driver left the scene, according to KCSO.

The injured passenger was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton for further evaluation and treatment. The 16-year-old passenger also was taken to the hospital, but did not appear to be injured.

The 16-year-old female driver of the truck, from East Bremerton, was processed for DUI and transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton for further evaluation and treatment.

Traffic investigators believe alcohol was a primary factor in the collision, KCSO said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Deputy Dave Green, with the sheriff's traffic unit, at (360) 337-4634.
