Coach pleads ‘not guilty’

Dec 17 2004

PORT ORCHARD — Andrew Alfred Jr. 33, plead not guilty to the charge of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor on Tuesday in Kitsap County Superior Court.

Alfred, a security guard and junior varsity boys basketball coach at Klahowya Secondary School, was arrested on Dec. 9 after it was discovered that he allegedly had consensual sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old female Klahowya student.

The student didn’t report the incident to the school, but confided in a friend who reported it to school authorities. When interviewed by a sheriff’s detective, the victim said she and Alfred had sexual intercourse once in August at his old residence and once again on Dec. 2 at his current address. She also said in fall 2003, when she was 16, she and Alfred kissed while in the security office of Klahowya, according to court documents. The victim also said that Alfred sent her several e-mail messages from his home which referred to their relationship and that they have been communicating by e-mail and instant messaging for the past year. She provided a detailed description of the furniture in Alfred’s residence.

During questioning Alfred initially denied any type of relationship, but then admitted to having sexual intercourse with the victim on Dec. 2 and denied having any other sexual relationships with any other students.

Alfred has an omnibus court hearing scheduled for Dec. 30. The omnibus hearing will be a status hearing to determine if the prosecutor and defense attorney are ready for trial. Alfred’s trial date is set for Wednesday, Feb. 2. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. His bail remains set at $50,000.

Since his arrest, Alfred has been placed on paid administrative leave by the Central Kitsap School District.

He has been a CKSD employee since fall 2001. He served as the in-house suspension monitor at Olympic High School from September 2001 to February 2002, when he transferred to his current position as security guard and junior varsity boys basketball coach at Klahowya Secondary School, according to district spokeswoman Laurie Cizon.

Prior to 2001, he served as a substitute teacher on one occasion at Central Kitsap Junior High School, Cizon said.

Before being hired by the school district, Alfred had to undergo a standard background check, as all employees do.

For the background check, Alfred had to submit a fingerprint to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office which ran it through the state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, she said.

While Alfred is on paid administrative leave from Klahowya pending the district’s investigation into the allegations of misconduct, boys varsity basketball coach Scott McMinds has assumed the duties of coaching the JV boys. There also are two volunteers helping coach, Cizon said.
