New Fair event is all bull riders

Jun 30 2004

The bulls are coming and that’s no line.

The Kitsap County Fair is going to be a stop on this year’s Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s (PRCA) Xtreme Bulls tour and organizers and rodeo fans are whooping it up.

“This works out well for us and the bull people,” Fair manager Frank Abbott said. “Now we offer so much more for the cowboys to do so it makes it worthwhile.”

The PRCA started Xtreme Bulls in 2003 after seeing the success of the Bulls Only Tour put on by the Professional Bull Riders. There’s 10 primary events and the Kitsap competition on Sunday, Aug. 29 comes a weekend before the Ellensburg Rodeo and its $75,000 purse.

The Kitsap Rodeo Cowpokes, the fund-raising arm of the Kitsap Rodeo, is putting on the event separate from the Stampede. There are some connections as Stampede stock supplier Growney Bros. is supplying some bulls along with Salt River Rodeo Bulls.

“It’s getting near the end of the season and some of the bulls are getting tired,” Cowpokes vice president JC Carlson explained for the need of additional stock suppliers.

Just the thought of getting an additional day of bull riding has local rodeo fans in a frenzy.

“We’re anxious about it because this is our first time and there’s a lot of excitement,” Abbott said. “We’re getting five calls a day asking when tickets go on sale.”

The wait is no more as tickets go on sale tomorrow, July 1, at all West Sound Bank branches. Adults are $16, kids and seniors are $14. The Cowpokes also are offering special seating with stage seats (located immediately behind the chutes) for $40 and in the dirt (the lower bleachers on the south end.) Passes for the Stampede will not be accepted.
