East Bremerton shooting still under investigation
Feb 07 2003
A 25-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly shooting another man once in the chest in the Safeway grocery store parking lot on McWilliams Road at State Route 303.
The suspect, Brian Michael Snelson, made his preliminary appearance in Kitsap Superior Court Wednesday and was to be formally charged yesterday with assault in the first degree and unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree.
The victim, Terrell Shaddox, remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a hospital spokeswoman said Friday.
At press time chief deputy Kitsap County Prosecutor Chris Casad said the two charges had been filed with the court. Snelsons arraignment hearing was scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.
The shooting occurred at about 1:30 p.m. following an argument between the two men according to court documents. Shaddox and his girlfriend were walking to the Safeway after their car broke down at McWilliams Road and SR 303 when Snelson drove up in his car and honked the horn at them, the girlfriend told deputies.
Shaddox and Snelson shook hands and Shaddox asked for help with his car. The men walked ahead of the woman and a scuffle broke out. Shaddoxs girlfriend said she saw Snelson pull a semi-automatic handgun from his waist area, the probable cause statement said.
The woman heard a shot and saw Shaddox on the ground. The woman told officers he shouted the assailants name and said he had been shot. Witnesses at a nearby hair salon said they saw the two men push and shove each other and also saw firsthand the shooting that followed.
Eventually, Snelson got into his car and sped away.
He was arrested at about 3:50 p.m. near the KinderCare day care center at John Carlson Road and SR 303.
According to court documents Snelson is not a stranger to law enforcement officers. Since 1994, he has been convicted of several different offenses.
