Fun center, other projects get hearing

Apr 26 2002

The Kitsap County Commissioners will conduct a public hearing on proposed amendments to the comprehensive plan at 6 p.m. Monday, April 29, in the Kitsap County Fairgrounds President’s Hall.

Up for discussion are a number of proposed textual revisions, map changes and 17 site-specific amendment requests.

Local proposed site-specific amendments include Brian Ferguson’s request to change zoning on 5.34 acres behind Fred Meyer on State Route 303.

Currently zoned urban medium, Ferguson want the county to change the property to highway tourist commercial zoning.

Ferguson, owner of A-Tech Construction in Bremerton, hopes to build a fun center on Almira Road. The center would cater to disabled children, a matter close to Ferguson’s heart because his daughter, 6-year-old Brandy, has cerebral palsy.

County staff doesn’t approve of the request, but the Planning Commission voted 7-1 in its favor.

Ace Paving has applied to change the zoning on 20 acres of property near the Dickey Pit from rural residential to mineral resource overlay. County staff approved the request and the county Planning Commission voted 7-1 in its favor.

James Robinson has applied to change the zoning on two parcels, both 7.5 acre sites on larger pieces of property. The first is located on the east side of State Route 303 south of the Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club. The second is located near Wal-Mart, west side of State Route 303. Robinson hopes to change the zoning on both from urban low to highway tourist commercial. County staff approved the request and the county Planning Commission voted unanimously in its favor.

Bill Schourup has applied to change the zoning on 3.06 acres, located north of Fairgrounds Road on the east side of State Route 303, from business park to highway tourist commercial. County staff doesn’t approve of the change and the county planning commission voted 6-1 with one abstention in opposition.

Winmar Company Inc. has applied to change five acres of a 10.37 acre site, located on Randall Way near the Target store, from urban high residential to regional commercial. County staff agrees with the change request, but the county Planning Commission voted 6-2 in opposition.
