'Spotty' snow causes dangerous roads

Jan 29 2002

Depending on where you live in Kitsap County, you were either shoveling snow off your driveway or merely brushing it off your windshield after last weekend’s flurries.

There was a light dusting in Brownsville, while Green Mountain residents saw several inches of the white stuff blanket roads, cars and yards.

“It was spotty,” county roads superintendent Bob Smith said. “We just trolled around and took care of the bad spots since it was sporadic.”

Smith said crews were on patrol around the clock starting Friday night, Jan. 25.

Roads were coated with ice amid sub-freezing temperatures, which made traveling hazardous for many drivers. Saturday morning was particularly bad, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Glenn Tyrell.

“There were 65 collisions reported on Saturday to Washington State Patrol in Kitsap County and 17 reported on Sunday,” Tyrell said. “It’s significantly higher than average, but it’s not unusual for the weather we had.”

Tyrell said a number of people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

“It was pretty much what we expected,” Tyrell said.

Getting those cars out of ditches and yards was the responsibility of local tow truck operators, which had a booming business.

“We saw double our normal business on Saturday,” said Stacey Tucker, owner of Chico Towing. “But Sunday was a regular day for us.”

Tucker said because the storm struck on a weekend, many people stayed home instead of venturing outside.

But she still had crews standing by to field calls.

“Having the snow come in over the weekend makes a huge difference,” Tucker said, adding that a snowy weekday means more traffic — and more accidents — on the roads as people attempt to get to and from work.
