Newberry Hill wall accident injures four

"A 20-50 foot wide portion of a wall being constructed on Newberry Hill Road collapsed Friday afternoon, injuring four workers.The incident occcured while work crews sprayed concrete onto the wall frame at the Newberry Hill slope stabilization project.There were a number of contributing factors, said Gary Ekstedt of the county Department of Public Works, engineering manager for the project. The problem occured on Friday and was initially blamed on the rain.I think the rain had little to do with it, Ekstedt said. It had more to do with the weather being cold and the concrete was not staying.The Newberry Hill slope stabilization project covers the part of the slope on Newberry Hill between Provost and Dickey roads. Construction of the $2.3 million wall, which is expected to last 30-50 years, began in August 1999. Demolition on the damaged area was scheduled to begin Monday before Geite (concrete) work continues, Ekstedt said.The projects early-December completion date will now be moved back a week because of demolition work and sound tests being performed to confirm the wall was not damaged more than estimated. A steel reinforcement bar tied to a number of forms for stability contributed to pulling down much of the wall after one part of it got too heavy, according to Ekstedt.The four injured men were treated and released from the Central Kitsap Urgent Care facility and Harrison Hospital.Ekstedt said the workers mostly suffered scrapes and bruises. The injuries didnt happen when the concrete wall fell, he said, but while they were trying to get out of the way."
