What’s Up Weekend Wrock

Nov 12 2008

Old-school skate punk at the Chuck, Seattle’s Sister Monk and The Banner Jump make up this weekend’s docket of wrock.

THURSDAY

DUN BIN HAD w/ Rule 22, The Last Up, Kamikaze Sex Pilots and Forty Seven at 7 p.m., Nov. 13 at the Charleston Music Venue, 333 Callow Ave. Bremerton. All ages, Bar w/ ID, $5 cover.

As a rule, I think, you should always make it a point to see any band with a name like Kamikazi Sex Pilots.

But maybe that’s just me.

However, if you happen to be a fan of the old-school-style California skate punk, circa late-90s, ala NOFX, Suicide Machines, Lagwagon, Strung Out and the like, you may want to take heed on that K.S.P. advice. Because Thursday night, the Tacoma ska-core band will be jamming with two modern day relics of the old-school skate-punk style — the slick Chicago-area band Rule 22 and a band of funny-looking drunk punks from California called Dun Bin Had.

Charleston-local thrash punkers Forty Seven, and the band formerly known as Ready Revolt, will be there as well.

So, bring your skankin’ shoes.

FRIDAY

SISTERMONK w/ guests at 9:30 p.m., Nov. 14 at the Manette Saloon, 2113 E. 11th St. in Bremerton. 21+, $5 cover.

Here’s a little bit of rock that won’t destroy brain cells if you stand too close to the speaker. But actually, by that definition, I’m not sure it would actually be considered wrock at all.

Maybe borderline schizophrenic beatnik rock, you might call it.

But who needs labels anyhow?

SisterMonk is a funk/jam/fusion-ish trio that shares home bases in Seattle and New York, making its way across the Sound this weekend, just to jam the Manette.

Comprised of two shaggy dude guitarists and a soulful blonde djembe-playing songbird, the three-piece spews a funky jazz folk rock jam that’s bound to be best in the raw — live.

SATURDAY

THE BANNER JUMP w/ Underride, Arsenal Way and Havoc Laden at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Winterland, 1220 Sylvan Way in Bremerton. 21+, $5 cover.

Here, again, is a little something to bang your head to.

Actually, quite a bit of it.

Reaching the peak of the weekend, The Banner Jump — a mutated Port Orchard band with killer bass work, some might fine drop beats and grunge-tinged vocals — joins Underride — a Seattle band that is said to reside in a land between metal and punk — and some wicked drop-d-ness from the streets of Bremerton, all in one night at Winterland.

Keep your ears peeled for the song “Government Cheese.”
