What’s Up Weekend Wrock
Nov 05 2008
An out-of-towners’ weekend — California pop punk, Seattle goth rock and Joe Buck Yourself, twice over.
FRIDAY, NOV. 7
HILLS OF ELYSIUM w/ Your Divine Tragedy, Broken Entry and Iron Spyder at 7 p.m., Nov. 7 at the Charleston Music Venue, 333 Callow Ave. in Bremerton. All ages, bar w/ ID, $5.
Call me a jerk for pre-supposing, but just by previewing the bands slated for the evening, I’m guessing there will be large amounts of black being worn at this show.
The bands look to be all out-of-towners, spanning the dark sub-genres of the head-bangers’ delight — from the straight-ahead, growling guitar rock of the Arlington band Broken Entry to the ambiguous quasi-epic-ness of Seattle’s Your Divine Tragedy.
But what lands the show in this weekend’s docket of wrock is, chiefly, the blunt, punkish goth/horror rock from Seattle band Hills of Elysium and their wonderfully assaulting songs, like “Tax the Obese” and “Pretty Pink Plastic Poser.”
HoE’s bewitching and brutal lead singer September Garland lays it all out over frankly a cleanly distorted sonic backdrop, oscillating from a matter-of-fact conversational style to blood-curdling scream to shouting punk manifesto and back. Just like that.

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR w/ Fireworks, All Teeth, Black Mamba and Running Circles at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the VFW Hall, 9981 Central Valley Road in Bremerton/Silverdale. All ages, $8. Presented by Big Mouth Music.
Here’s another couple of out-of-towners you might not want to miss in an interesting pop punk/hardcore hybrid of an all-ages show.
This Time Next Year, a clean-cut melodic pop-punk five-piece hailing from outside of Oakland, came through Silverdale for a few different Big Mouth shows this past summer. This weekend, they return along with some California hardcore from All Teeth and Fireworks — another band of melodic pop-punk — who say their music sounds like “John Bender thrusting his fist into the air at the end of ‘The Breakfast Club.’”
The trio plays Studio Seven the day before joining local hardcore in Kitsap. The day after they play the Viaduct in Tacoma. Then This Time Next Year and Fireworks are on to Gilman Street in Berkeley, Calif.
