Weapons targeted, not our troops | Letters | May 15

May 15 2009

Are we living under some kind of evil spell in this county that makes people fall asleep in the face of danger?

Were you aware that if Kitsap County seceded from the U.S., we would be the third largest nuclear power in the world – after the U.S. and Russia? Did you know that 24 percent of all U.S. nuclear warheads are stored in Kitsap County, just 15 miles down the road. There’s got to be a better way.

On May 9, I was part of the group of Bainbridge Island Women in Black who stood vigil with the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action at the gates of Trident Nuclear SubBase.

Each year we (BIWIB) demonstrate with them and each year I’m appalled at the lack of attention paid to this effort by the local press. Hey, I know you can do better.

This year, across the street stood counter demonstrators with “Thank You” and “Support the Troops” signs.

We all know they weren’t thanking us for coming to visit them. However, if they think we are opposed to our troops they’re wrong. We fully support our troops. We only oppose the nuclear weapons they have to handle. We don’t want anybody to have to do that.
