Piling removal completed at Strawberry Plant

On Saturday morning more than 100 pilings still stood off Strawberry Plant Park. By Sunday evening only a handful remained.
A two-man crew from Mukilteo-based Lakeshore Marine Construction took advantage of high tides over the weekend to remove the rows of creosoted pilings, which once supported a packing plant.
Removal was completed with a barge and crane. A vibratory hammer was used to loosen the pilings before they were pulled from the muck.
The work was part of a larger Department of Natural Resources creosote removal project. Pilings were pulled from several private tidelands in Eagle Harbor last week. The city had requested the removal of Strawberry Plant pilings.
According to DNR Project Manager Monica Shoemaker, the Lakeshore crew was expected to complete work at Hawley Cove Monday, then move on to Port Orchard for a piling removal piling removal project in the Harper estuary. Work will likely resume on Bainbride next week, with a series of piling removals and beach cleanups slated for the island's east coast.
Creosote-soaked material will be hauled to a landfill in eastern Washington.
The work is being funded through the Puget Sound Initiative.
