9:45 a.m. A Rockaway Beach Road resident reported several pieces of jewelry missing from her home. She said she had been gathering some items to sell in boxes, which she left in her bedroom. The items had gone missing early this year and she had not been able to find them over the last several months. She said there were no signs of forced entry to her home. No suspects.
3:52 p.m. A Bainbridge man reported a possible scam. He said he had received an email purportedly from Bank of America, which said there had been “irregular activity” on his card. He called the provided 1-800 number to inform the company that he did not have a Bank of America card. A representative asked for his social security number for verification, which the man provided. He later realized that the email was likely a scam. The man contacted Bank of America, the Socical Security Administration and the Federal Trade Commission to report the incident. The case was recorded.
4:23 p.m. Police responded to Sportsman Club Road and Finch Place, where a green BMW was resting in a ditch. The vehicle was empty except for various toiletry items that were scattered inside. As officers inspected the scene, a vehicle stopped on the road and a man approached. He said his wife had been driving the BMW and that a friend had given her a ride home after the car had gone in the ditch. Police contacted the woman by phone and verified that she was not injured. When asked to return to the scene, the woman said, “I shouldn’t, I’ve been drinking.” An officer interviewed the woman at her home. She appeared intoxicated and admitted to having drunk three drinks earlier that afternoon. She said she had been traveling between 35 mph and 40 mph when the car went into the ditch. The woman refused sobriety tests and was arrested. At Kitsap County Jail, the woman refused to answer questions and told the officer “You can’t prove that I was behind the wheel.” The officer reminded the woman that she had already admitted to driving. The BMW was impounded. Two pipes, a small amount of marijuana and various prescription pills in unmarked bottles were found inside the car. The woman was cited for driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $5,000.
7:18 p.m. A deer was struck by a Toyota Corolla on SR-305 north of Seabold Church. The driver, a Poulsbo woman, said the deer had run out in front of her and she did not have time to stop.
NOVEMBER 20
10:16 a.m. A Bainbridge woman reported attempted fraud. She said that she had received a check for $3,550 from “Mike Brown” at “CBS Personnel Marketing” in Glendale, Calif. The check came with instructions to deposit the check, then go to the Wal-Mart and purchase a piece of jewelry. She would then take a $400 fee and return the remainder of the money to the company via MoneyGram. The woman said she deposited the check and purchased a $60 necklace from the Wal-Mart in Poulsbo and then returned the remainder of the money as instructed. The woman later discussed the incident with her husband who noticed that the area code on the letterhead from the company was actually from Montreal, Canada. Realizing she was the victim of a scam, the woman contacted Wal-Mart and her bank, and was able to cancel both the MoneyGram and check without incurring fees. The woman said she had talked to “Mike Brown” twice by phone. The first time they spoke, the man had an African accent. The second time he did not have an accent, so she asked if she was speaking to Mike. The man said “yes,” and the accent returned. The woman provided police with documents from the incident. The case was recorded.
3:36 p.m. An Elizabeth Place resident told police that sometime overnight someone had entered her house and stolen an empty backpack. The backpack was a black Jansport hiking backpack, valued at $150. Nothing else appeared missing. No suspects.
6:07 p.m. A Bainbridge man was jailed after punching his 15-year-old son in the face and digging his thumbnail into the boy’s neck. The mother of the boy had called 911 to report that the son was behaving recklessly following an argument with his father. The argument had escalated into a physical confrontation, which ended with the father throwing the boy to the ground and pinning him.
