New date for women's health screening | Around the Island

Nov 01 2008

New date for health screening

The free Women’s Health Screening event originally scheduled for Oct. 31 in Port Orchard has been rescheduled for Nov. 21, as a result to technical problems with the mobile screening unit.

The breast and cervical health screening – which includes a mammogram and Pap test – will be offered to women ages 40 to 64 who are uninsured or with limited insurance, or who have no or limited income.

Exams will be conducted in the Swedish Hospital Breast Care Express, a full-service, self-contained, 64-foot mammography unit and women’s preventive exam clinic on wheels. The unit will be open between 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. at the South Kitsap Helpline parking lot, 1351 Bay St., in Port Orchard. Child care will be provided during the exam.

Space is limited; for an appointment, call (360) 874-5580 or (360) 874-5581.

Tames Alan’s tasty history

Kitsap Regional Library will bring actor Tames Alan to its branches this month for a series of talks on food and history.

Alan has been taking her Living History Lectures to venues throughout the U.S. and Canada since 1986. A historian and fashion history instructor as well as a thespian, Alan specializes in the lively illumination of a range of topics.

Her KRL shows will focus on food through the ages.

For instance, one might not have known that the tomato was once considered poisonous, or that at one time, a person’s place in society was judged by how much spice was displayed on his table.

The shows, titled, “There and Back Again: the Migration of New World Foods,” “The Spice of Life,” “Trial by Fork” – an explanation of the intricacies of formal Victorian dining – and “Salon Suppers,” will cycle through KRL branches. Trial by Fork will be presented at the Bainbridge Island Library at 2 p.m. Nov. 2.

For more information about the series, contact Susan Rosapepe, public information and community affairs manager, at (360) 405-9133.

Music Guild seeks volunteers

Island Music Guild has a number of volunteer opportunities available, largely in the area of computer-based tasks to help IMG and community members stay connected in their musical endeavors.

In particular, IMG seeks assistance with website maintenance, website bulletin board moderation and music news publication.

Also of interest are “budding promoters” who can help to coordinate, advertise and stage manage the guild’s concert events.

To volunteer or to learn more, call Executive Director Dave Bristow at 780-6911.
