Two male suspects stole cash and cigarettes from Fletcher Bay Mart Friday evening before fleeing on foot, according to Bainbridge Police.
Bainbridge Deputy Police Chief Mark Duncan said a suspect with a shirt covering his face entered the store at 8:22 p.m. and demanded that the cashier open the register. The cashier ran into the business's back room to find her husband and the suspect jumped the counter and opened the register.
Duncan said a second male suspect entered the store 30 seconds after the first and attempted to enter the back room. Duncan said the cashier's husband began swinging a mop handle at the second suspect, chasing him back into the main room.
The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and grabbed cigarettes before running toward New Brooklyn Road, Duncan said. The suspects did not display weapons during the robbery.
Police are still investigating the incident and have not made arrests, Duncan said.
One suspect was described by police as 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build and wearing a white T-shirt and jeans. The other was 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a heavy build and wearing a dark, puffy down jacket and dark, baggy pants. Both suspects attempted to cover their faces with clothing during the robber.
Police are asking citizens to call the department at 842-5211 with any information regarding the robbery or suspicious persons that may have been in the area.
