New faces in council races

"Some new faces and a few familiar ones came forward to seek public office as filing week wound down Friday afternoon.Through 2 p.m. Friday, just two hours before the cutoff, all city races were shaping up to be contested.Winslow contractor Bill Nelson launched his second bid for the city council - he ran and lost in 1993 - filing for the open central ward, position 4 seat. He will face Wing Point activist Bill Knobloch and Grow Avenue resident Houston Wade for the seat, guaranteeing a primary.Ferncliff resident Deborah Vann filed to challenge incumbent Jim Llewellyn for the central ward, position 5 seat.The most crowded race appeared to be for an open seat on the Bainbridge fire board, with at least four candidates filing.Incumbent Emily Sato filed to retain her seat on the Sewer District No. 7 board. Sato was appointed to the board last year, to fill out the term of long-time board member Kit Spier, who moved out of the district.Several incumbent park and school board members also filed, as did new park board hopeful Tom Swolgaard of Fletcher Bay Road. Final filings were to be posted online Friday evening at www.kitsapgov.com.
