Chili and good fun at this year's Hyla Chili Cook-off

The 12th annual Hyla Chili Cook-off, happened Saturday at Hyla Middle School.
The community fund-raising event for the private middle school netted about $3,000 according to Thomas Webber, the head of the school.
"We definitely met our fundraising goals, even though it's more of a community event," Webber said. "It was fabulous, it was a celebration for all the people on and off the island and for our school community."
The Harbour Public House was awarded both the public's favorite and the judges' favorite chili awards.
This year, chilies were prepared by San Carlos, Cafe Trios, Mon Elisa's, Casa Rojas, Doc's Marina Grill, Andante, Cafe Nola, The Harbor Public House and Real Foods Market and Cafe. Cornbread was provided by Blackbird Bakery and Real Foods.
In preparation for the event, volunteers pruned the school grounds and students incorporated math lessons on data gathering and probability to even the odds for the carnival games.
According to Lynn Agnew of Hyla, hundreds of people usually attend the annual event.
Entrance was free, with chili tasting tickets cost about $10 with all proceeds benefiting Hyla financial aid and educational programs.
