What’s Up Weekend Wrock

Celebrating 2009 on through the weekend with rock, metal, punk, banjo, and some good ole acoustic blues.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 31

TONS OF MUSIC AFOOT FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE throughout Kitsap.

Literal sonic tons. That’s what’s going on for New Year’s Eve. Truly sonic tons (if there is such a thing) of some of the best local wrock in town, plus parties galore with grand openings, dance parties, DJs, champagne and everything swanky. Or casual. Or grungy. Your choice.

THURSDAY, Jan. 1

LE ATTEMPTS w/ Rishloo, Chyeah Chyeah!, ...Is Electric and Folleti Files at 7 p.m. — all ages, bar w/ ID, $5 cover at the Charleston Music Venue, 333 Callow Ave. in Bremerton.

In addition to being one of few anywhere that night in Kitsap, this show should be a nice little head trip to start off the new year.

It starts out with Folletti Files — a local concoction of paranoid angry rock and spiky hip hop — onto something just as raw with pop-punkish melodic madness from another local band ...Is Electric followed by another raw, local, more indie-ish experimental tribe from Poulsbo called Chyeah Chyeah!

And that’s only the beginning. Two more distinct styles will close down the first 24 hours of 2009 as Maple Valley straight-ahead hardcore band Le Attempts follows a Deftones-meets-System of a Down-after-a-bad-David Bowie-binge-sounding Seattle band, called Rishloo.

And there’s to 2009.

Then the Charleston does it all again the next night, only with more metal, featuring Super Happy Storytime Land, Abandoned Fetus, Talk Jonny and Victims Voices.

FRIDAY, Jan. 2

PATRICK BRADSHAW’s banjo, guitar and harmonica acoustic tunes at 7:30 p.m., all ages, $5 donation at the Pegasus Coffee House, 131 Parfitt Way on Bainbridge. Info: www.pegasuscoffeehouse.com

Should be a good show for contemplation on the year ahead. Or the year past. Or the present.

That night on Bainbridge Island, singer/songwriter cat Patrick Bradshaw will ferry his strings and harmonica over from the city for another show at the Pegasus Coffee House.

He’s no stranger around there.

He’s even got a song called “Manzanita Bay, Bainbridge Island.”

And like those places, many things about his tunes are also contemplative. The rolling folk-style guitar, the honestly intrepid lyrics, and meandering harmonica melody, a la Bob Dylan. There’s a certain sense of peace underlying it all.

SATURDAY, Jan. 3

And here’s another Bob Dylan-like singer/songwriter acoustic blues man for the beginning of 2009 — Colin Spring.

No stranger to Tizleys, the Portland stringer is one of the Poulsbo pub’s favorites and returns periodically throughout the year by popular demand.

He’s another kind of contemplative act with a more comical side. He’s the type of guy who puts his heart and soul on his sleeve, right next to his sense of humor. He spends time between folksy acoustic blues tunes with quips and poetically reciting nonsense just to see what kind of response he gets.

Wit and rhythm and wisdom and a selection of more than a couple hundred different beers at Tizleys; not a bad way to start off the new year.
