HUB Hot-Spot winners named

Snoqualmie Valley Youth HUB hosted their second annual

Hot-Spot competition last week. The competition gave local youth a chance to

show their basketball-shooting prowess.

The grade winners this year were first/second grade, Frank Tassara

and Sarah Williams; third/fourth grade, Ian Brown and Breanna Hobbs;

fifth/sixth grade, Adam Dalman and Corrin Kruse; and seventh/eighth

grade, Tyson Gmeiner.

The top four teams to raise the most money in the

Hot-Spot fundraiser and to receive a pizza party were first/second grade boys' team,

the Rockets, coached by Eric Jenson; fifth/sixth grade girls' team, the

Sting, coached by Rick Divers; fifth/sixth grade girls' team, the Liberty,

coached by Warren Sheldon; ;and third/fourth grade Celtics, coached by

Mike McDevitt.

Congratulations to all Hot-Spot winners and teams for a

successful season.

Mike a Husky?

DUVALL—Cedarcrest's Mike Smith has decided to pass on an

opportunity to play football for the University of Oregon next fall, and is

currently leaning toward accepting the challenge of staying home and

playing for the University of Washington.

Smith was twice named as a first team wide receiver on the

all-KingCo team, despite playing for a team that had only two wins over the past

two years. He finished the 1999 season just short of his personal goal of

1,000 yards receiving for the year.

Smith plans to attend spring Husky practice late this month, but will

not be allowed to participate until he actually graduates high school and

enrolls at U of W. The 6-4 senior was true to his commitment to play for

a Division One college and turned down several opportunities to play both

football and basketball at smaller schools throughout the Northwest.

On April 6, Smith will join an elite group of 11 seniors from Eastside

high schools at a "Last Chance Senior (Basketball) Tournament" in Los

Angeles. There will be coaches from schools across the country looking for

players who have not yet signed letters of intent.
