Carl Berger Berglund

Carl Berger Berglund of Snoqualmie died at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue on Jan. 4. He was 89 years old.

Mr. Berglund was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Duluth, Minn., the son of Swedish immigrants Nels and Lily Berglund. He was raised in Duluth and graduated from Denfield High School in 1932.

Following graduation he "rode the rails," ending up in Philipsburg, Mont., where he worked on a ranch. Later he worked on the Fort Peck Dam project in Montana. He moved to California and continued his ranching career near Gilroy. During a long hospitalization in California, he met and later married his student nurse, Marguerite Campbell, on Sept. 19, 1941.

They lived for awhile in Duluth and Milwaukee, Wis., before moving to the Snoqualmie Valley in 1952. In 1954, they moved to Highland Drive near Snoqualmie where they resided for the next 50 years. They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Mr. Berglund was employed as a boilermaker for most of his working life. He worked on several dams, in shipyards and also on various construction projects in Alaska. In addition, he worked for several local companies including Temco and Pacific Car and Foundry.

Mr. Berglund furthered his education through his continual studies of all types of materials. Even though he did not have an opportunity to attend college, he was considered to be a well educated man with an amazing depth and breadth of knowledge. Mr. Berglund played the harmonica and had a beautiful, tenor singing voice. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Unity Lodge No. 198 in North Bend and the Boilermakers Union Local 104/502.

Mr. Berglund is survived by one daughter, Marie B. MacDuff of Issaquah; two brothers, John Gilbert Berglund of Falls Church, Va., and Paul Nels Berglund of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Julia Lund of Duluth and Elizabeth Innes-Taylor of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada; three granddaughters, Katie MacDuff of Seattle, Karen MacDuff of Issaquah and Tessa MacDuff of Redwood City, Calif.; a grandson, Ian MacDuff of Bothell; and two great-granddaughters, Ivy and Emma MacDuff, also of Bothell. He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite on Dec. 5, 2004, and a daughter, Karen Marie, in 1945.

A funeral service was held Jan. 10 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Upper Hillside Cemetery in Issaquah.
