Back to Bethlehem
Jul 02 2008
Summer hardly means boredom for Vacation Bible School campers at Snoqualmie United Methodist Church.
Vacation Bible School runs 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., July 21 through 25.
Coordinator Alex Hulet describes the activities as "good old-fashioned campy stuff with a really positive message."
Activities cater to children, from age 4 through fifth grade, and range from singing and dancing to a simulated farmers market. Parents often arrive early to participate in the day's wrap-up sing-along.
"The camp has been going for decades and decades and decades," Hulet said.
Each year the camp centers around a unique theme. Hulet hopes to transport participants back in time to the Roman Empire this summer using the theme, "Journey to Bethlehem Village," with authentic activities and short dramas performed by parent volunteers. Last year, 50 children enrolled in the camp.
"Kids are such a priority at the church," Hulet said. "Everyone gets involved in some way."
Older kids are welcome to participate, too. Although the curriculum is designed for the younger set, older kids are invited to work alongside adult volunteers.
Cost is $5 per child. Scholarships are also available. The camp depends on donations of time and materials, said Hulet, who would like to see attendance grow.
