OVERLAKE VOLLEYBALL LOCKS UP TRI-DISTRICT BERTH

The Overlake School volleyball team won an epic battle against University Prep on Halloween, beating the Pumas, 3-2, in a loser-out match at the 1A Emerald City League tournament and locking up a berth to the Tri-District tournament.

With the win, Overlake takes on a The Owls and Pumas traded 25-22 victories in games one and two, and game three was another tight-knit affair as Overlake came through in the clutch and notched a 25-23 victory.

The Pumas clawed back to take game four 25-19 to set up a first-to-15 tiebreaker. The Owls were 2-0 in tiebreakers going into the match against the Pumas.

The two evenly-matched teams went back and forth until they were locked up at 15-15, with one team needing to win by two points. Answering the call, Overlake put away two straight points for the hard-fought win, 17-15.

The Owls combined for a diverse offensive attack, led by Claire Bazely with 10 kills, while Lauren Ambielli (9), Jessica Elliot (7) and Jessica Weisbly (5) all contributed to the win. Bazely and setter Alex Weaver shared setting duties with 16 and 15 assists, respectively, with Weaver leading the team with six service aces.

The Owls then played Bellevue Christian in a seeding game Tuesday night and lost 3-2 on the Vikings’ home court.

Playing for the No. 3 seed to tri-districts, the Owls traded 25-21 wins with Bellevue Christian before getting blown out in the third game 25-14. Needing to rebound quickly, the Owls came back to claim game four 25-20 to force another first-to-15 tiebreaker, which the Owls fell just short of winning, 15-13.

For Overlake, Claire Bazely and Jessica Elliot led the offense with 11 kills each, with Elliot and Alex Weaver each notching four service aces.
