Local shop awards money donations

Eastside Community Aid Thrift Shop approved 14 grants, gave money to two philanthropic organizations and awarded three Lake Washington Technical College scholarships for 2008.

In all, the money donations totaled $63,183.

The following 14 organizations received grant money:

• Youth Eastside Services (YES): $5,000 for their mental health services for children and their families.

• Budkis Charbonneau Foundation: $2,500 for low income seniors emergency pet care.

• Assistance League of the Eastside: $5,000 for their Operation School Bell providing new clothes for kindergarten-9th grade children.

• Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing: $2,000 bus coupons for low income families

• KIN: $5,000 for their recreational opportunities for low income Kirkland families.

• Helping Hands for the Disabled: $5,000 for their emergency supplies.

• Network Services: $5,000 for program support for homeless Eastside families.

• Kirkland Arts Center: $1,700 for their scholarship support for art camps for low income Kirkland children.

• Sibling House: $5,000 for appliances/beds, tutoring support for Eastside foster families.

• Eastside Domestic Violence Program: $5,000 for their crisis hot line.

• Lake Washington Adult Day Health Program: $5,000 for their program support for clients unable to be left alone.

• East Lake Washington District of Garden Clubs: $2,500 for public school horticulture projects.

• Compassionate Friends: $1,121 for their newsletter support for one year.

• Hopelink Kirkland food bank: $5,000 for food only.

Two philanthropic organizations also received some money for their efforts: Phi Beta Psi was given $1,562 for their cancer research and Laureate Gamma Rho $1,800 for their service project.

The two groups have provided volunteers at the Thrift Shop on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Fall scholarships were awarded to three Lake Washington Technical College students: Karen Witsell and Samuel Weise each received $2,000 toward their engineering degrees and Stacy Caves received $1,000 for her human services degree.

Eastside Community Aid Thrift Shop, located at 12451 116th Ave. NE in Kirkland, is an all-volunteer run shop whose proceeds are donated back into the community through grants and scholarships. 

Volunteers are always needed.

Clean, resalable donations can be dropped off at the shop during business hours Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
