National Merit semifinalists announced

Jonah Kohen, of Mercer Island, was named a National Merit Scholar semifinalist in September. Kohen is currently a student at Northwest Yeshiva High School.

In addition to Kohen, there were six Mercer Island High School students who were named to the list. There are about 16,000 students nationwide who were named to the annual scholarship semifinalist list. Each will have the chance to compete to become a National Merit finalist, which will be announced early next year.

The Reporter welcomes notification from parents, the community and other schools of students who live on the Island who are being honored. Send information, including the student’s name, grade and school name, to education reporter Megan Managan at mmanagan@mi-reporter.com.

MISD School Board meeting Thursday

The Mercer Island School District Board of Directors will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building Board Room.

Currently on the agenda for the board to discuss is the Healthy Ways to School Committee, the February 2010 levies and a discussion of the governance process monitoring.

The Healthy Ways to Schools Committee will provide an update on its efforts to reduce school-area congestion by increasing the number of students who bike or walk to school.

The School Board will also hear a presentation reviewing how technology is used by the district and how equipment purchased with funds from the 2004 and 2008 technology levies changed the district’s use.

A copy of the full agenda and School Board packet can be found at www.misd.k12.wa.us/board/agenda.
