Mercer Island School Board member John DeVleming decided June 11 to withdraw from re-election to a second-term, setting the stage for an election contest between former Mercer Island High School PTA President Terri Caditz and local physician David Myerson.

DeVleming blamed work prospects that could require him to relocate off-island as a deciding factor in relinquishing the position at the end of the year.

Given the uncertainty, he said it was best not to make another four-year commitment.

The local attorney attracted two challengers while School Board Vice-President Adair Dingle runs unopposed.

DeVleming endorsed Caditz as a qualified choice for the position, citing her years of involvement with the PTA and a number of awards and recognitions for her volunteer work.

"She is very interested in continuing what the current board has planned," he said. "When Terri made her interests known, it seemed like the perfect [time]."

His withdrawal eliminates the possibility of a primary election for the School Board Position 2 seat.
