Mercer Island Police Blotter | Dec. 24

Dec 24 2008

Forgery and fraud

A 43-year-old Island resident from the Shorewood Heights Apartments found that two one-way airline tickets had been fraudulently purchased on his debit card between Nov. 28 and Dec. 2. According to the incident report, the victim notified the airline and was told that the tickets were not used because the names on the tickets did not match the names of the passengers’ identification cards.

Nearly $5,500 was spent on credit cards fraudulently opened using the identity of an Island resident, 42, between Nov. 23 and Dec. 5. According to the incident report, the cards were from major department stores, and the victim later found out that a cell phone account had also been opened in his name.

Auto accidents

A 17-year-old Islander rear-ended another vehicle while heading southbound on Island Crest Way around 3:35 p.m. on Dec. 16 near Island Park Elementary School. According to the accident report, the car that the teenager struck had stopped for a crossing guard who had entered the crosswalk to help children cross the street. The teenage boy told officers that by the time he noticed that the car in front of him had stopped, it was too late to stop even after slamming on his brakes. The other driver complained of back pain, according to the report.

An 18-year-old Islander rear-ended a car stopped in the roadway in the 8400 block of S.E. 71st Street around 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 15. According to the incident report, a 47-year-old Islander had stopped in the roadway to talk to her son, who was walking home. The teen said that when he saw the car while driving along the curved road, he hit the brakes but skidded into the rear end. An officer’s investigation found no skid marks, but there was a small patch of ice about 100 feet behind the car that was hit. The officer’s report also states that the visibility around the curve extends as far back as 400 feet. The officer did not issue a citation to either driver.

A 21-year-old Islander lost control of his car and crashed into another when he hit a patch of black ice while turning right from Island Crest Way onto S.E. 71st Street at 8:45 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Icy conditions contributed to another wreck when a 28-year-old Bothell man turning left off of Island Crest Way onto S.E. 53rd Place lost control of his car on the ice and crashed into another car driving past him around 10:50 a.m. on Dec. 14.

Another Islander was in an accident involving icy or slick conditions that caused property damage during the morning of Dec. 12. According to the incident report, a 48-year-old resident was driving in the 8200 block of West Mercer Way around 10:30 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle on a slick patch of roadway and drifted off the side of the road into some trees and mailboxes. Police found the victim in the driver’s seat with an unlit cigarette in her mouth and noticed a lighter on the floor near her feet.

Car prowls

A lawn mower was stolen from the back of a pickup truck during a car prowl on the night of Dec. 12, when the truck was parked at the Town Center gas station on 78th Avenue S.E. According to the police report, the lawn mower belonged to the 52-year-old truck owner’s mother.

Burglary

Several pieces of jewelry, including rings and earrings, were stolen from a burglarized apartment sometime between Dec. 12 and 14 in the 2800 block of 75th Place S.E. According to the incident report, the victims believe that a plumber who had been working in the hallway outside of their unit used a key to get into their apartment and steal the jewelry from their bedroom.

A Rock Band video game stored as a Christmas present was stolen during a burglary in a storage unit at the Shorewood Heights Apartments sometime between Nov. 30 and Dec. 13. According to the incident report, the victim stashed the game in the storage unit and found that it had been pried open and was missing when she went to retrieve it as an early Christmas gift. Several other units had also been pried open.

Found

A man’s gold and silver wedding band was found outside a Town Center restaurant along S.E. 24th Street at about 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 14. The ring has been placed in the police “found property room.”
