Twelve students at Mercer Island High School were named National Merit Scholarship finalists. Students were selected from a group of 16,000 semifinalists in February. Approximately 15,000 students across the nation were chosen as finalists.

Michael Chien, Matthew Jensen, Harrison Owens, Colin Ramsey, Zachary Rowe, Derek Schulte, Murad Ulityonok, Matthew Vincent, Anna Vogel, Rebecca Yoda, Michele Zemplenyi and Inar Zhang were selected as finalists from MIHS.

Finalists become eligible for Merit Scholarship awards based on their academic records, test scores, recommendations, activities and an essay written by the finalists. Between March and June, the National Merit Scholarship committee notifies approximately 8,200 finalists of scholarship selection.
