On Aug. 4, the Mercer Island City Council approved Ordinances No. 08-07 and 08-08 to submit Proposition No. 1: General Obligation Parks and Open Space Bonds, and Proposition No. 2: Levy for Park Operations and Maintenance, to King County Elections for inclusion on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.

According to King County Elections and Washington State Law, the City of Mercer Island has the responsibility of appointing committees to prepare statements in favor of and in opposition to ballot measures.

The job of the committee is to write a statement for or against the ballot measure. The committee is required to submit the statement by Aug. 20 to King County Elections and obtain the opposing statement on Aug. 22 in order to write and submit a rebuttal statement by Aug. 24. The word limit on the pro and con statements is 200 words, and the word limit on the rebuttal statements is 75 words.

• One voter is needed on the Committee in favor of Proposition No. 1. Two positions have been filled.

• Three voters are needed for the Committee in opposition to Proposition No. 1.
