Sammamish group Friends of Youth to sponsor two Challenge Day events this summer
May 30 2008
Friends of Youth is sponsoring two Challenge Day events this summer for the greater Sammamish community.
Featured on Oprah, Challenge Day is designed to help shift peer pressure to peer support, increase self-esteem and limit the acceptance of violence, isolation and teasing.
“I am all for building our cultural competence in the diversity arena, and this is what Challenge Day does,” said Michele Petitti, City Council member and donor relationship officer for Friends of Youth.
“I am hoping some more Challenge Days will find their way into the middle and high schools ... Sammamish is a tough place to be just your average teenager or late bloomer,” Petitti said.
The Pacific Cascade freshman campus held two Challenge Days last year, said world studies teacher Caroline Friesen.
“It was absolutely amazing. The program was fantastic,” Friesen said. “We all feel like it is a program that is very beneficial to breaking down barriers.”
To participate, students must be entering the eighth through 12th grades. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21; limited spaces are available. Registration is $25, and available online at www.friendsofyouth.org. For more information about Challenge Day, including video clips, visit www.challengeday.org.
Event organizers are seeking sponsors and adult volunteers. For more information, contact Michele Petitti at michele@friendsofyouth.org or Sosie Sagherian at ssagherian@comcast.net.
