in brief

Issaquah Tigers

win again

The Issaquah Softball 9-10 Tigers blanked the Eastlake Wildcats 17-0 on April 24. Ellie Hendrickson and Sydney Schultz had key kits and

Brooke Davis came through with a key defensive play.

Pitchers Emily Winterstein, Michelle Gersuk and Madalyn Lyles combined for 11 strikeouts in four innings.

Rowers take

first at Brentwood

For the first time in Sammamish Rowing Association’s history, the team captured the Regatta Championship at the Brentwood Regatta April 25-27.

Brentwood Regatta, hosted by Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, B.C. is the largest Junior regatta west of the Mississippi. This year 1,640 athletes competed from 35 clubs around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Points are awarded based on placement in the finals. SRA qualified 30 boats for the finals and captured eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

Dragons off

to a hot start

The Issaquah Dragons, which won the 10-year-old state Pony League baseball title last year, got off to hot start again this year.

The 11U Dragons most recently entered the West Coast Junior Olympic and NIT Tournament for 12-year-olds — a qualifying tournament for the 12-year-old Junior Olympics in July. The Dragons dropped their first game to the reigning state champion Spokane Vipers, but went on to win their next three and earned their way back in to the championship game against the same Viper team. This time the Dragons got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning and won the game 7-2 and earned a bid to the 12-year-old Junior Olympics in July. The Dragons have now won 14 of the last 16 tournaments they’ve entered. And, 18 of the last 20 dating back to when they were 9-year-olds.

The Dragons began their 2008 campaign with a decisive 10-run mercy win over the Wacker Baseball Academy in the Super Series 11U Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., in March. They followed that up with winning the Baseball Players Association 11U Spring Opener Tournament in Kent. The Dragons won all four of their games in this tournament by virtue of the “mercy rule.”

Wendelken signs with Sonoma State

Jeremy Wendelken, who played golf at Issaquah High before transferring to Eastlake this year, signed his National Letter of Intent to attend Sonoma State University in Northern California. Wendelken had to sit out his senior season due to WIAA rules. According to Golfstat, Sonoma is currently ranked second in the nation in Division II.
