St. Thomas School to open new Medina campus

Aug 16 2008

Just 14 months after razing its former buildings, St. Thomas School will open the doors to its new building and campus at 8300 N.E. 12th Street in Medina.

On Thursday, Aug. 28, the school invites its students and their families, alums, supporters, friends, neighbors, and members of the community to attend the official ribbon-cutting celebration at noon.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the culmination of months and years of research, planning, designing, and construction. The new St. Thomas School, designed by Bassetti, a Seattle architectural firm, represents the realization of a goal to build an environment that best supports the growth and education of young children, from preschool through their elementary years.

Sellen Construction partnered with STS, Bassetti, and the Seneca Group, the project managers, to create buildings and grounds that complement and support the full range of learning experiences and activities. Currently, STS has targeted LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certification at the gold level, a certification process that will not be concluded until the building is fully functioning.

The opening of the new campus, at its historic location, also represents the completion of a successful fundraising effort. STS’ capital campaign, “Making Great Greater,” focused on support for all aspects of children’s education. As an independent school, STS must support its building, campus, and programs from its own resources since it does not rely on revenue from taxes or government sources. Funds were contributed by a wide range of donors, from individuals to significant gifts from non-government foundations.

The school is located across the street from Medina Park. St. Thomas School is beginning its 58th year.
